Okies = slang term for people from mostly Oklahoma who moved into California during the 1930s as a result of severe dust storms that made farming there untenable. (yes there have always been ecological disasters and not everything that happens is because of man-made ‘climate change’)

Dust bowl = what the area of Oklahoma became known as because of the dust storms.
